There is gold at the end of effort.

The role‐play sessions were intense, to say the least. After all, we were required to learn three lengthy presentations, word for word. The format was basic. Read the material, attempt to memorize the material, then role‐play the content with a partner. We highlighted the areas where we were struggling so that we could be aware of what we needed to work on.

This was definitely different from learning a playbook and, without question, it was 10 times more challenging than I ever thought it would be. To say my presentation sounded like a dreadful “canned presentation” would have been a huge compliment. My confidence was intact, and my resolve to do better was strengthened.

By the end of my first day of role‐playing, I had actually made measurable progress. To my own shock, I had actually memorized two of the three suggested presentations, and I had the third one about 70 percent complete. I figured out that there really is gold at the end of the effort. Although the delivery wasn't anywhere near flawless, I was no longer searching for the words.
